Consejos para el TOEFL: speaking

Bien, dentro de dos semanas voy a ir a hacer el TOEFL, un examen de inglés, a Salamanca. Durante todo este tiempo he aprendido muchísimo inglés, además de recopilar una buena cantidad de recursos sobre este examen en concreto (otro día explicaré cómo me decidí qué examen preparar entre TOEFL, IETLS y los exámenes de Cambrigde).

El otro día encontré en un blog unos “templates” para la parte del speaking. Esta parte tiene 6 pruebas. En la primera, por ejemplo, se te pide que hables de algo que te guste o que describas algo en concreto. Se te dan 15 segundos para prepararte y tienes que hablar 45 segundos. Las otras pruebas son en esta onda, aunque en las siguientes pues tienes que leer un relato, escuchar una conversación/clase relacionada con el tema, y describir las relaciones entre lo que escuchaste y lo que leíste, o describir los puntos descritos…

Lo más difícil es lo justo que es el tiempo que te dan. En todas te dan 15, 20 o 30 segundos para prepararte, y tienes que hablar entre 45 y 60 segundos dependiendo del ejercicio. Vamos, que tienes que tener muy claro cómo decir lo que quieras decir para no perder tiempo en ello. Ahi es donde entran los templates en juego, ayudando mucho a organizar las ideas de lo que se dice (de hecho, el exponer tus ideas de forma coherente y ordenada es lo que más se valora en esta parte del examen).

Pues como a mi me ha ayudado mogollón la ayuda que he encontrado, la comparto por si alguien está pensando en intentar aprobar el TOEFL, ya que nunca está de más el tener una ayudita:

Independent Tasks

Question 1: Personal Preference
Describe something (favorite thing/person/etc.). Present/past tenses, or conditional situation.

Question 4: Academic course: General/Specific.
Short passage + lecture. The passage explains something in general terms, and the professors usually gives examples or applications of the concept.

Based on the passage, the X is …
During the lecture, the professor explains further the topic by giving two examples/applications.
The first example he/she gives is…
The second …
These examples are useful to understand the concept of X.

Question 5: Campus situation: Problem/Solution.
Conversation between two students about some problem in campus.

According to the conversation, the woman/man has a problem about …

Here is VERY important that you give your opinion. Therefore, don’t spend too much time describing the situation.
Try to choose which option do you prefer while listening the conversation, and start thinking why is better that solution. Do not restate the SAME arguments of the adviser, so try to find any other advantage of that solution from your personal experience.

Question 6: Academic course: Summary.

The lecturer is talking about … in the scope of a … class.
According to him, the X is …

Here there isn’t an easy template to use.
Usually, the speaker explains something by giving examples, steps in a process or facts in chronological order. The key here is to pick the dates/steps of the process/etc during the speech. Forget about other details.

You have to paraphrase the explanation by giving the most important ideas, not the details.
